Year 4/5 Endangered Animals Unit

Year 4/5 studied endangered species, and visited Fleay's Wildlife Sanctuary.

Some of the children's work is presented below.

Our 7 Hour Trip

The year 4/5 class went to the Gold Coast to visit Fleay’s. Fleays is a wild life park where they keep endangered species to breed and look after. We left school at 8.30am . We got there at 10.00am .

When we got there Ranger Jess introduced us to Fleays. She led us to a nice picnic area. After that she told us to zip up our bags properly so the ibis can not get in it and eat our lunch.

After that Ranger Don took us to the tawny frog mouth show. We met the Ranger who was presenting it to the year 4/5 and also other public that was there. They brought out 3 species. They were a glider, tawnyfrogmouth and also a lizard.

Next Ranger Bob took us to look around. There were lots of endangered animals to see. When I saw the cassowary I called Zoe and Ebony because they were doing a project on it. It was interesting seeing the colour of the cassowary eggs. It was much bigger than an emu’s eggs.

Then after that we went to the Nocturnal House. We saw about three bilbies, two platypuses and a turtle. Next it was lunch. Mmm yum!

The we went to the snake show. When we got there it was started but we were lucky to pat a python. When it was my turn to pat it my heart was beating. Then it was sad to leave Fleays we said good bye and headed off to the bus.

It was a lovely day and an awesome time. I would like to thank Mrs Clark and Mrs Sawyer for helping Mrs Huntly looking after us and also Mr Cockerill for driving the bus and taking us there.

My Time At  Fleays

At 8:30 a.m. we went on the bus. Mr Cockerill drove. Ebony and I sat together. When we got there we had lunch.

After lunch we went to a show. First we saw a tawny frog mouth. I learnt that they are not an owl because if it was it would scratch the Ranger’s hand. Next the Ranger brought in a shingle back lizard. Everyone thought it had two heads but it was his tail. Last she brought in a sugar glider. If you speak or move it will get scared. People started to stand up and the sugar glider got very scared and clung onto the Ranger’s arm. She tried to put it back.

Next Ranger Bob came and first he showed us a fresh water crocodile. They only eat something they can eat whole. Also they had thousands of birds with the crocodiles. The crocodiles will not eat the birds because they can’t eat them in one go.

Next we came to the cassowary. Ebony and I were sooooooooooooo excited. I got to hold the cassowary egg and Ebony got to hold the emu egg. The cassowary egg was bigger.

The female cassowary was getting aggressive so we had to run a bit.

After that we went to the Nocturnal House to see the animals in there. They think it is 7 o’clock in the morning. We saw the bilby, the platypus and many others.

I had a fun day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Year 4/5 Trip

On September 7 year 4/5 went on a trip to David Fleay's Wildlife Park. We left at 8.30 in the morning and got there at a quarter to ten. On the way we played scissors, paper, rock, and we drove past Dream World, Movie World and Wet and Wild.

When we got there we had to walk on this little bridge. When we got to the canteen, the ranger told us we would have morning tea before we went anywhere. Our class went to a bird presentation, and then went with Ranger Bob. The first thing we saw was crocodylis johnstoni. While Ranger bob told us about the crocodile, I saw two crocodiles in the mud and one in the water.

My favourite animal was the Estuarine crocodile, crocodylis porosis! When Levi and I saw the crocodile we were so excited. When we got there we even got a picture of a crocodile's egg, and a picture of Levi and I holding a crocodile's skull.

The Trip To Fleays

When we first got there the Ranger explained everything we had to do. So first we had lunch.

Then we went to see the Tawny Frogmouth. When the Ranger had shown us the Tawny Frogmouth she brought in a little box. We had to guess what was inside the box. But then we couldn’t guess. When she brought it out it was a glider.

After the Ranger finished talking about the glider she showed us a trick. She put it on a branch up high with some food on it .Then she told it to fly off. It glided down really quickly into her hands for some more food.

Then Ranger Bob came in and took us outside to look at some different animals. He took us to where the crocodiles were. There were many different kinds of birds there like ibis, swans and geese.

My favourite thing was the crocodile. Mojo was about 7 metres long or more and weighed about 400 kilograms. I also liked the cassowaries and the dingoes.

Even though my bird, the Golden Shouldered Parrot was not there I still had heaps of fun. We went to have some lunch at 12:30 pm. After that it was time for the snake show.

During the snake show the Ranger said that her husband was really scared of snakes. The Ranger said we could also feel the python. It felt very soft.

THAT WAS THE BEST TRIP EVER! I HOPE TO GO THERE AGAIN.
